Seascapes
Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology (SCOPE-Gradients)
The ongoing SCOPE-Gradients program tests ecological theory and modeled outputs from the Darwin model against observed biogeochemical organization across the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre to the Southern Hemisphere. As a group, we are studying ecological transition zones characterized by changes in microbial ecosystems to understand patterns and mechanisms of resource supply in growth, mortality, and export. Towards this effort, I am using satellite remote sensing to evaluate the stability of seacapes and their potential to track functional phytoplankton communities.

Above is a simulation of Ecological Provinces from the Darwin model. The colors represent distinct combinations of dominant phytoplankton function types, with relative concentrations of biomass indicated by color brightness.
